Beware Door to Door Alarm Sales!

During warmer weather, security system companies hire sales people to go door to door, making “cold calls” on homeowners.

Local attorney’s general and consumer protection agencies are flooded with complaints about these companies.

In most cases, the salespeople use high-pressure or deceptive sales tactics to get potential customers to buy expensive equipment and services that consumers don’t need or want.
State and local officials advise consumers to avoid sellers who:

Insist this is a time-limited offer and claim that you need to act now
Attempt to get you to sign a contract stating the equipment is “free”

Use scare tactics stating there has been an unusual amount of supposed local burglaries

Target homeowners who have signs on their properties for security systems with competitors, in some cases telling homeowners that their system is not working properly after a very short “inspection” of the existing system

State that they represent your existing security company and that they are there to “upgrade” or “replace” your current security system

Claim your security company has gone out of business, that they have taken over the accounts that you have to buy new equipment and sign new contracts.

Consumers or businesses who believe a door-to-door seller has engaged in misleading or deceptive business practices should file a complaint with their local attorney general.
